Former US President, Barack Obama has returned to Africa and visited his father’s home country of Kenya.

President Obama visited the small village of Kogelo in western Kenya, 12 years after making similar trip.

The former US leader visited Kogelo in 2006 when he was a US senator before becoming President.

On Monday Mr Obama helped to inaugurate a youth project in the Kenyan village to be run by his sister.

The project known as the Sauti Kuu Foundation is to help young people develop their sporting talents and gain vocational skills.

Mr. Obama in a speech said “I am grateful for your hospitality and friendship- it is a joy to be back with so many people who are family to me and many who also claim to be family to me – everybody is a cousin”

“Real progress depends on addressing the challenges that remain. It means rooting out the corruption that weaken civic life.”

He expressed hope that the project will provide the opportunity for young Kenyans to realize their potentials.

“Kenya has made extraordinary strides in recent decades..a young Kenyan doesn’t have to do what my grandfather did and serve a foreign master, there has been real progress in this amazing country” he added.

Mr. Obama prior to the inauguration met Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House in the capital, Nairobi.

Mr Obama will be heading to South Africa to give the annual Mandela Day lecture on Wednesday.
