African Migrants on Thursday attacked security forces at the Morocco-Spain border.
The 600 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were attempting to cross a double barrier between Morocco and the Spanish territory of Ceuta.
AFP reports that the migrants attacked the security officials with quicklime. Police say the scramble over the double barrier is the biggest in the Spanish Ceuta region since February 2017.
In 2017 more than 850 migrants entered the territory over a period of four days. 602 people made it across the barriers this time round.
Police officer in Ceuta was told AFP that the migrants climbed over the double barrier, early on Thursday morning, scrabbling “with much violence.”
The police officer is quoted as saying that “more than a dozen police” were injured.
Some migrants were also injured in the process, according to a Red Cross official who spoke with the AFP.
A statement from the Guardia Civil police force in Ceuta said “Some 800 migrants attempted to scale the perimeter fence, attempting to cut through the fence using shears at around 6.45 on Thursday morning.
African migrants have consistently preferred to cross into Ceuta and Melilla. This because these Spanish regions share border with Morocco’s northern region.
Hundreds of African migrants continue to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe.
Many of them drown in the process while other had to be rescued.
