The Constitutional Court of Zimbabwe on Friday upheld the election victory of Emmerson Mnangagwa in last month’s presidential election.

The court delivered its judgement after hearing arguments from parties in the election challenge case filed by the opposition.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, declared President Mnangagwa winner of the historic election. He obtained 2.46 million votes against 2.15 million for the opposition candidate, Nelson Chamisa.

The opposition MDC had alleged electoral fraud and rigging in favour of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The MDC was seeking fresh election or a declaration that Chamisa won the July 30 poll.

The Chief Justice Luke Malaba who chaired the panel read out the judgement saying the case by the opposition lacked enough evidence.

Malaba says the court “declares Mnangagwa as the duly elected president of Zimbabwe”. The Court’s decision is final though.

Preparations will now have to take place for the swearing in of Mnangagwa as President.

Mnangagwa has also been reacting to the court ruling in a tweet.

This will be his first electoral victory after he became president following the resignation of his former boss, Robert Mugabe.

Mugabe resigned from power after a brief military takeover to usher in Mnangagwa.
