EU car convoy in Somalia hit by bomb

A European Union armoured convoy in Somalia was hit by a suicide car bomb on Monday in the capital Mogadishu.

Reuters reports that according to the police the bomb damaged one vehicle but there was no casualties.

Meanwhile army officials have later said that there could be deaths and wound casualties.

The armoured vehicles had Italian and EU flags on them, according to a Reuters eyewitness.

The European Union is a major sponsor of the African Union peace keeping force helping to fight off militant groups operating in the country.

Somalia’s militant group al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the the attack.


Al-Shabaab is affiliated to al Qaeda. Its militants want to topple Somalia’s Western-backed central government.

The group says it wants to impose a strict interpretation of Islam’s sharia law.
