The Ethiopian government on Sunday signed a peace deal with a rebel group. It had previously outlawed the group classifying it as a terrorist group.

The deal with the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) rebels is to restore peace to eastern Ethiopia.

The rebels have for years been fighting for secession of the Somali Region. They called that secession agenda in 1984 as Ogaden.

There have been many clashes between the rebels and government troops resulting in several deaths. The rebels declared a ceasefire in August after the group was removed from the list of terrorists groups in the country.

The move taken by the parliament forms part of efforts by the Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed to restore peace to Ethiopia.

Te agreement calls for an end to hostilities. The rebel group is now expected to “pursue its political obligations through peaceful means”.

There is hopes this latest move could restore calm to the restive Somali region which has been tensed for months now.
