The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia will now be headed by prominent female politician who recently returned from exile.

Ethiopia’s lawmakers have approved the nomination of Birtukan Mideksa who was nominated by Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed.

Mideksa had majority of the members of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) approving her appointment.

State broadcaster FANA reports that there were 4 votes against her candidature and 3 abstentions.

Mideksa sworn in as the new head of the electoral board in the parliament house.

Fana reports that the new head of the electoral board promised to “work hard to make the electoral board neutral and credible.”

Birtukan intends changing “the board’s image” and rolling out “current reform process”.

The former judge and founder of Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) party, returned home early this month after seven years of exile.

In recent times key positions in Ethiopia have been occupied by women.

The East African country already has a well-known human rights lawyer Meaza Ashenafi elected as its first female head of the federal Supreme Court.

Another woman, Sahle-Work Zewde was also elected as the country’s first female president recently.
