In November 2018 a man pronounced dead in Ethiopia shocked mourners when he turned out to be alive inside a coffin.

Relations of the man Hirpha Negero from a village in the Sibu Sire district in the central Oromia region at the time celebrated his reported ‘resurrection’.

Local media reported then that Mr. Hirpha was placed in a coffin by village undertakers and was ready to be buried when mourners heard a knock inside the coffin.

One of the undertakers Etana Kena told the BBC at the time that ‘‘People were shocked and ran away, I couldn’t get anyone to help me.”

He said “I have buried more than 50 or 60 bodies. I have never anything seen like this before. He seemed to be dead.”

Mr Hirpha himself told the BBC that while in the coffin he “heard someone crying. I was suffocating and trying to tear away the shroud. I was so weak, unable to speak out.”

But Kena this week confirmed that Negero has finally died. This time round the family waited for a day to pass to be sure that indeed he had died.

Kena told the BBC that this time he is certain of his nephew’s death since he suffered a long illness.
