A former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama on Saturday won his party’s presidential candidacy race.

He will now contest the 2020 presidential election on the ticket of the opposition party the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The former President who was defeated in the 2016 election by current President, Nana Akufo Addo declared his intention to contest last year.

In Saturday’s election he won by 95.24 percent of the total valid votes cast by his party supporters.

The other six contenders together had about 4 percent of the votes. The results show how still popular Mahama is within his party.

Some of those who contested him for the party’s flagbearership slot were his previous appointees.

John Mahama is still very popular within his party.

Mr. Mahama who was president between 2012 and 2017 had previously served as vice president under the late President, John Evans Atta Mills.

John Mahama took over from him months before the 2012 elections following President Mills’ demise in July of that year.

The former president is likely to now battle the incumbent President Nana Akufo Addo in next year’s presidential election.

He told jubilant party supporters in Accra on Saturday night after his victory that “I want to serve notice to Ghana that from the outcome of this election, the NDC is strong.

The NDC is united. The NDC is poised for victory in 2020. And nothing, absolutely nothing can stop our march towards [the] Flagstaff House.”

Mahama is hoping to regain the presidency in next year’s presidential poll.
