Former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe will be buried at Heroes’ Acre but his family says that will take place in 30 days.

His nephew Leo Mugabe told journalists on Friday that chiefs in Mugabe’s village have agreed that he should be buried at the Heroes’ Acre.

But the chiefs will need 30 days to perform rituals for his burial as a chief.

“He is going to Zvimba so the people of Zvimba can pay their last respects,” said Leo Mugabe.

Mugabe died at the age of 95 at a Singaporean hospital. His state funeral will be held on Saturday after two days of public viewing of his body at Rufaro stadium.

There has been tension between Mugabe’s family members and the government over where he should be laid to rest.

Some from the Mugabe family said he wanted to be laid to rest in his home village of Zvimba.

Zimbabwe has declared Mugabe a national hero. Mugabe was born on 21 February 1924, in what was then Rhodesia.

He led Zimbabwe to independence in 1980 and has ruled the country for decades.

Mugabe was Zimbabwe’s first post-independence leader but resigned from power after a military takeover in November 2017.

Robert Mugabe first served as prime minister of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987 and then as president from 1987 to 2017.
