Algeria: Ex-president’s brother jailed for 15 years

Said Bouteflika, the brother of Algeria’s former president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

He was accused and put on trial for conspiring against the state and undermining the military.

The trail lasted for two days.

Said Bouteflika was regarded as the person behind the presidency of his brother, Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

Two other former secret service chiefs, Mohamed Mediene and Bachir Tartag were also sentenced together with Said.

A political party head Louisa Hanoune also suffered similar fate.

Said and other convicts were first detained in May at a time series of arrests were carried out targeting the former president’s inner circle.

President Bouteflika suffered stroke in 2013 left power this year after a wave of protests.

He had declared his intention to run for office again despite his ailing condition.

Ex-president Bouteflika was confined to a wheel-chair and medically unwell after ruling Algeria for 20 years.
