A Ugandan woman has been jailed two years by a court for forcefully feeding her step daughter menstrual blood.
The court in the town of Mukono delivered the judgment on Thursday on the convicts own plea of guilty.
The court reduced Annet Namata’s sentence from seven to two years because she pleaded guilty.
The judge considered her decision to plead guilty an act that saved court time so had to be lenient on grounds that she is a mother of three children.
According to court proceedings, on June 6, 2019 while at her marital home in Kitega village, Namata served her step daughter food mixed with her menstrual blood.
That act was contrary to Section 171 of the penal code of Uganda which provides that “Any person who unlawfully or negligently does any act which is and which he or she knows or has reason to believe to be likely to spread the infection of any disease dangerous to life commits an offence and is liable to imprisonment for seven years.”
Local media Daily Monitor reported that not everyone is happy with the judgment handed down to Namata.
That includes residents in the community and her own husband, Yunus Lungu who said he wished Namata would have gotten a longer jail term.
“Let her serve her time and hopefully she may learn her lesson,” Lungu was quoted as saying.
Some Ugandans have been reacting to the jail term and the woman’s action.
