Eighteen people including children have been killed in a military plane crash that occurred on Thursday in Sudan’s West Darfur region.

Sudan military officials said the plane crashed shortly after taking off from an airport in the region.

It is not clear what caused the crash as officials launch investigations into the incident.

According to news reporting the Antonov 12 plane crashed five minutes after taking off from El-Geneina.

El-Geneina, is the capital of West Darfur and is located close to Sudan’s border with Chad.

A crew of seven as well as three judges and eight other civilians, including four children all died in the crash, the military statement said.

Already at least 48 people have been killed and more than 200 injured in tribal fighting Darfur.

Fighting has been taking place between Arabs and Masalit, non-Arab ethnic group.

The fighting broke out following a row between two people, which led to Arab militiamen raiding camps for the internally displaced.
