Ghana: At least 8 small scale miners killed in clashes with soldiers

At least eight small scale miners have been killed in Ghana during clashes with soldiers who were guarding a mine site belonging to the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA).

The mine is located in the city of Obuasi in the country’s the Ashanti Region came under attack on Saturday evening.

Ghana’s presidency has expressed regret at the incident and ordered an investigation immediately.

Eye witnesses say the miners besieged the premises of the mine, fully armed and opening fire.

The military officers guarding the facility then responded with gunfire, resulting in the reported deaths.

Four vehicles were burnt during the clashes. The incident has now heightened tension in the town.

According to local media reporting, the reason for the clashes is still unknown.
