The candidacy Maurice Kamto, a key opposition figure in Cameroon has been rejected by the electoral commission.
Kamto is considered the main rival to incumbent President Paul Biya, in the upcoming presidential election on October 12.
The Cameroon’s electoral commission on Saturday rejected Kamto’s candidacy at a press conference.
The commission approved a list of 13 candidates for the elections but gave no reasons for rejecting the candidacy of Kamto.
But those whose candidacy have been rejected can however appeal the decision within two days.
There are concerns the rejection of Kamto’s candidacy could spark unrest.
“In case of the rejection of certain candidates in this election, it is possible there will be protests in the centre of Yaounde and near the seat of ELECAM,” the United Nations Department of Safety and Security said in a statement on Friday.
President Biya, 92 is seeking reelection despite ruling the country for the past 43 years. He is the world’s oldest-serving head of state.
