Ghana mourns two ministers and 6 others killed in a helicopter crash

Ghana has declared three days of national mourning following the tragic death of two ministers and six others. They were all killed in a helicopter crash on Wednesday.

The military helicopter crashed at Adansi Brofeyedu while en route to Obuasi in Ghana’s Ashanti region for a state event. There were three crew members and five passengers on board when the helicopter.

The country’s Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed were among those killed.

Six other officials including Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman, ⁠Dr. Samuel Sarpong; and former NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Samuel Aboagye have also been confirmed dead in the accident.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that the helicopter took off from the capital Accra at 9:12 a.m. on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

Viral videos show the aircraft being burnt beyond recognition, with no visible signs of survivors at the scene.

Announcing the deaths at a press conference, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah described the incident as a national tragedy. Mr. Debrah stated that national flags will fly at half-mast in their honour until further notice.

The Z9, a utility helicopter often used for transport and medical evacuation.

Preliminary information suggests the helicopter crashed into a tree under circumstances yet to be determined.

Some analysts have also suggested adverse weather conditions and technical issues.
