Sudanese refugees in Ghana have been agitating over their living conditions in the west African nation.
They complain of lack of food, good medical care and job opportunities in Ghana.
Scores of them stormed the premises of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Ghana on Thursday.
They pitched camp outside the premises of the UNHCR and refused to be relocated by police.
The refugees numbering about 70 have been living at the UNHCR premises in Ghana’s capital Accra since November last year.
A spokesperson for the refugees, Mohammed Abdul Rahman told local media Citi FM that they would only relocate when they have an assurance from authorities that their welfare would be guaranteed at their next location.
“Some refugees are living in the Western Region and some are living in Accra. In the camp, we do not have job opportunities and we do not have food supply. We are asking them to supply us food and provide jobs for our children.
“We have health challenges. We do not have money. The UNCR is responsible for meeting our demands so we are not moving from here until we see how they are going to cover our demands,” said Rahman.
Hundreds of refugees escaped the civil war in Sudan’s western Darfur region and trekked about 3,000 km to seek asylum in Ghana.
The Sudanese refugees are not the only group of asylum seekers to demand better living conditions.
Two years ago some Liberian refugees some Liberian refugees in Ghana staged a protest against the UNHCR in over resettlement package.
Ghana is home to about 42,400 refugees from various countries.
