Renowned Ghanaian politician, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has been sworn in as President of Ghana at a colorful ceremony in the country’s capital, Accra.
He takes over from John Dramani Mahama who he defeated in last year’s presidential elections. The new President Akufo-Addo has a huge task of fulfilling the numerous promises he made to voters during the elections.
Topmost among them are tackling corruption, creating jobs for the numerous unemployed youth and putting the country’s economy on a better footing.
President Akufo-Addo, 72 has become the seventh president of Ghana and the fifth since the country returned to constitutional rule in 1992.
An economist, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia who worked as deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana also took his oath of office as the vice president of Ghana.
The ceremony was witnessed by thousands of Ghanaians at the Black Star Square in Accra. 11 African heads of state also graced the event. Among them are chairperson of the sub-regional bloc ECOWAS, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Ivorian president, Alassane Ouattara who was the special guest of honour.
The new president promised to protect the interest of Ghanaians and transform the economy to support the livelihood of Ghanaians.
Expectations are high among Ghanaians for their new president to deliver.
