South Africa’s Iconic freedom fighter, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela died on Monday throwing the country and the rest of Africa into a state of shock and mourning.

There has been little detail about her final moments but one of her bodyguards has revealed to The Star in South Africa how the late anti-Apartheid activist died.

Winnie Mandela is reported to have had lunch with her family on Sunday afternoon, then hours later she was rushed to hospital haven complained about struggling to breathe.

She was said to be “jolly as usual” on that day at her home in Orlando West, Soweto, with her grandchildren and staff.

“The only time she came downstairs was when we took her to the hospital for a check-up or when she was going out with family, either for lunch or dinner,” the bodyguard said.

The 81-year-old then told those at home that she was not feeling well, that was about 7pm and she was quikcly rushed to Netcare Milpark Hospital in Parktown.

Madikizela-Mandela after arriving at the hospital on Sunday night, was “not too vocal”.

“I saw her body on the hospital bed on Monday afternoon. I was shattered. It was hard to see her lying there. We got on very well. She was like a mother to me,” the bodyguard was quoted by the Star to have said.

He added, “She was humble, loving and caring. She was a peaceful person and guided me a lot.”

A state funeral is to be held for the late freedom fighter this month as South Africans continue to mourn her death.
