Five people have been charged in Ethiopia for attempting to kill the country’s Prime minister, Abiy Ahmed.

The Ethiopian prime minister was a target of a grenade attack at a rally on June 23 this year.

Two people died in that attack which took place in the capital, Addis Ababa. More than 100 people sustained injuries as well.

Prime minister, Abiy Ahmed however escaped unhurt in the attack. His supporters had come to the rally in support of Mr Abiy at the Addis Ababa’s Meskel Square.

The accused have not reacted to the charges when they appeared in court.

State prosecutors say the suspects had concerns about Mr Abiy and his commitment towards the interests of the Oromos ethnic group.

The Oromos ethnic group is the largest in Ethiopia. Abiy Ahmed himself is an Oromo and became the first from the group to become Prime Minister.

The Oromos have for years agitated demanding an end political and economic marginalization. Abiy Ahmed however preaches reconciliation and peace which some dislike.
