The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has secured his party’s nomination as its candidate for next year’s presidential election.
President Buhari is seeking re-election in February 2019 and did not have any opposition to his nomination.
His spokesman said on Saturday that the ruling All Progressives Congress party nominated Mr. Buhari on Friday in a nationwide primary.
President Buhari’s main challenge to his re-election will come from the main opposition People’s Democratic Party.
The PDP is yet to selected a candidate to challenge Buhari. Buhari has faced major challenges in his country and criticisms about his performance.
The 75 year old leader is struggling to deal with his country’s economic crisis as millions remain jobless. He has also failed to deal with ethnic clashes and the insurgency of militant group Boko Haram.
President Buhari in May told party supporters that that he is “not in politics for fun, frivolity or to amass wealth. I have always been driven by a deep sense of commitment to make a difference in the lives of our people.”
President Buhari has contested for president in 2003, 2007 and 2011 but only became successful and 2015.
