Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is set to debate presidential candidates participating in the country’s 2019 elections.

His main rival in the election is Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

President Buhari is the candidate for the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

The Nigerian Election Debate Group announced on Thursday that January 19, 2019 will be the date for the presidential candidates debate.

That debate will make room for all presidential candidates of different political parties taking part in the 2019 elections.

The vice presidential candidates for the election will however hold their debate on December 14, 2018.

The announcement comes days after the two leading presidential candidates for the 2019 elections in Nigeria, launched their manifestoes.

The Manifestos

The manifestoes contain details of the plans the two leading candidates intend executing when voted into power.

Nigerian opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar said in his budget that he intends to invest $90 billion annually in infrastructure over the next 5 years.

He also intends boosting investment in the oil sector should he win the February presidential race.

Buhari, on the other hand, said he intends pursuing his anti-corruption agenda. He promised to fight corruption during his first term.

Many analysts say that fight has been daunting for President Buhari.

“We are committed to deepening the work we started this first term such that the nation’s assets and resources continue to be organised and utilised to do good for the common man,” Buhari said at the manifesto launch.

Buhari also said Nigeria has a chance to make “a break from its tainted past which favoured an opportunistic few”.

Abubakar from the opposition PDP is hoping to convince voters to help him unseat President Buhari.

Buhari and Abubakar used to be allies in the past but Abubakar, a former vice president defected from the ruling party recently.
