State prosecutors in Ghana have charged a senior military officer for his role in a failed attempt to destabilize the country.

Colonel Samuel Kojo Gameli and another civilian, Gershon Akpa who is an employee of the Ghana Armed Forces were charged on Friday.

They were said to be part of the plot to overthrow the government.

Prosecutors charged them with possession of explosives and ammunition without lawful excuse.

The government on Monday said in a statement that some individuals were involved in an “elaborate plot targeted at the Presidency.”

It said an operation by security agencies led to the discovery of what is believed to be a weapons manufacturing factory.

The operation and subsequent arrest of suspects took place at a suburb of Ghana’s capital of Accra called Alajo.

In a statement the government said the weapon factory was located in a building which operates as a medical facility known as Citadel Hospital.

Medical Director and owner of the hospital, Dr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm and his two accomplices – Mr. Ezor Kafui (a local weapon manufacturer) and Mr. Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu (aka BB or ADC) were arrested during the raid.

State prosecutors told a district court that the soldier and the civilian charged in connection with the coup plot are members of ‘Take Action Ghana’, a group led by Dr Mac-Palm.

They are said to be planned to engage in a series of demonstrations geared at toppling the government.

Although all these individuals have not been charged with treason or offences related to coup plot, the government said more charges could be added in the coming days.

The lawyer for the suspects has denied his clients committed the crimes they are charged for.

Ghana since 1992 has not experienced any coup or attempts to destabilize the country.

The latest development according to the government should not put fear in citizens since the security agencies are on top of issues.
