Malawi’s Local Government Minister Lingson Belekanyama has died after getting Covid-19, according to government officials.
Government officials have confirmed the death of Belekanyama who was diagnosed with Covid-19 two weeks ago.
Local news outlet Nation Online reported that “Min. of Information Gospel Kazako has confirmed the death of Belekanyama saying the country has lost a true patriot, hardworker, unifying factor & someone very focused.”
The minister was quoted as saying that “government will follow Covid-19 procedures in the burial of Belekanyama.”

Belekanyama is the highest public official and first Cabinet member to succumb to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Malawi has 9,027 confirmed cases of coronavirus including 235 deaths.
