Uganda’s Karamoja Affairs Minister Mary Goretti Kitutu has been charged over the theft of iron sheets in the north-eastern region of the country.
The Ugandan director of public prosecutions approved the corruption charges against the minister.
Kitutu is not the only high profile public official mentioned in the iron sheets scandal.
The speaker of parliament and some cabinet ministers have also been mentioned in the scandal.
The scandal involves the alleged theft of 5,500 iron sheets meant for disaster victims in the Karamoja region.
President Yoweri Museveni has called for prosecution of all those found guilty.
According to the prosecutor Ms Kitutu, who is under police detention, will be charged in court over corruption.
“The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has sanctioned charges of corruption and conspiracy to commit a felony against Hon. Kitutu Mary Goretti Kimono for diverting iron sheets meant for the Karamoja Community Empowerment Programme,” a statement said.
Police presented the minister in court to give her plea.
Mrs Kitutu who will remain in custody until next Wednesday is alleged to have given the iron sheets to her relatives and officials.
“I have understood the charge and it’s not true,” she responded in court, speaking firmly.
She will spend the Easter holiday in Luzira prison where she will be remanded by the Anti-Corruption Court after being charged, local media report.
