Nigerian transgender woman jailed for abusing bank notes

A transgender woman in Nigeria, popularly known as Bobrisky has been jailed for six months for abusing the the local currency, the naira.

She has no option of fine as part of the sentencing by the court.

Bobrisky, one of Nigeria’s most popular celebrities last week pleaded guilty four counts of abusing the the local currency when she appeared at the Federal High Court in Lagos to respond to the charges.

She reportedly threw bank notes in the air at social events to symbolise appreciation, an act that is often done at Nigerian weddings and other celebrations.

Brobisky in March sprayed or threw the naira banknotes at the premiere of Ajakaju, a keenly awaited film by actress and producer Eniola Ajao, at Film One Circle Mall.

The act was captured on video and circulated widely on social media.

Prosecutors say the act carried out by the woman was an offence which carries a maximum punishment of six months in jail.
