SA students clash with police over leaking roofs

Police on Friday clashed with  some students of a South African university who were protesting about slow wi-fi services.

The students from Westville Campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) were angry at the services provided them by their university.

Students have been agitating since the beginning of the week complaining about poor state of residential blocks.

They also complain of leaking roofs, broken showers and lack of kitchens.

A student is quoted by the The Mercury as saying that ‘That ceiling is cracking. I have decided to move my bed to the other side because I am worried it might collapse on me while I am sleeping.”

“It is not just the outside residences that have problems. This residence is falling apart and we have been complaining since 2016,” another student said.

The students have also been agitating over poor living conditions in Durban’s coastal city. The students reportedly set a guard house on fire.

Police were seen chasing protesting students with several of them arrested. Classes have been suspended since protests broke out earlier in the week.

Education officials are reportedly aware of the situation and now hoping to resolve the crisis.
