The drug enforcement authority in Mali has destroyed over four tonnes of drugs by burning them.

This is part of renewed efforts at dealing with the drug trade menace in that country.

3.5 tonnes of cannabis, 500kg of psychoactive medication sold on the black market and 400g of cocaine were burnt by officials.

The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel was in Mali last month where she stated that “For Mali it’s to create stability, create peace, protect borders, combat drug trafficking which is a resource for these extremists and to implement the peace agreements. And thats how we want to and we will be able to help the country”.

Drug trafficking in the Sahel region is reportedly becoming a major funding avenue for militant Islamist groups.
