Health officials in Nigeria have confirmed the spread of Monkeypox in 23 of Nigeria’s 36 states, with 61 people so far infected by the disease.

So far only one person has been officially confirmed dead from the disease since its outbreak in September.

Monkeypox, a viral illness is caused by a group of viruses that include chicken pox and smallpox, according to health officials.

The first case was noticed in the Democratic Republic of Congo and there have been subsequent outbreaks in the West African region.

The virus transmitted to humans by monkeys, rats and other wild animals, causes blisters, aches and fever with humans also capable of spreading it.

According to the WHO, the monkeypox virus can cause a fatal illness in humans and, although it is similar to human smallpox which has been eradicated, it is much milder.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has said that the number of new cases is now declining.

A major awareness campaign has been launched to warn people against eating monkeys and bush-meat.
