Nigeria’s First Lady Aisha Buhari returned home on Saturday after months abroad.

Mrs Buhari had been on pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia and also spent some time in the UK.

She however returned to Nigeria amid rumours of her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari intending to take a second wife.

Rumours were extremely rife in Nigeria that the planned wedding between the President and fellow politician Sadiya Farouq was to take place on October 11.

The first lady told reporters shortly after arriving in Nigeria that the reported marriage rumours were results of “fake news” that will “lead us to something unimaginable”.

She was also quoted by the BBC Hausa as saying that “the person that promised her [Sadiya Farouq] marriage didn’t know it wasn’t going to happen. She [Ms Farouq] didn’t deny the marriage until the day passed.”

Sadiya Farouq is the minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, a new ministry created by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Both Sadiya Farouq and President Buhari did not comment on the rumoured marriage.

The President’s spokespersons however described the reports as “fake news”.
