An Indian couple named their twin babies after the coronavirus pandemic which started in Chinese city of Wuhan.

The twins, a boy and a girl were born during the lockdown in India to stop the spread of the virus.

The parents decided to name the babies Covid and Corona in remembrance of the pandemic and the devastation it has brought to them.

The couple who are based in the city of Raipur however said it is possible for them to rename the babies in future.

Mother of the babies, Preeti Verma told local news outlet PTI that “The delivery happened after facing several difficulties and therefore, me and my husband wanted to make the day memorable.

Indeed the virus is dangerous and life-threatening but its outbreak made people focus on sanitation, hygiene and inculcate other good habits.”

“Thus, we thought about these names. When the hospital staff also started calling the babies as Corona and Covid, we finally decided to name them after the pandemic,” she added.

A spokesman for the hospital said both Covid and Corona are healthy and have now been discharged with their mother.

The babies were delivered on March 27, within 45 minutes of the couple’s arrival.

According to news reporting doctors had to perform a caesarean section due to complications.

The coronavirus has infected over 1 million people as at April 3, 2020 and killed over 50,000 people worldwide.
