Ghana’s Special Development Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson has been embroiled in a shooting incident that disrupted the ongoing voters’ registration exercise at a centre.

Officials of the Electoral Commission fled the centre after the shooting incident at the Kasoa Top Hill Registration Centre.

Eyewitnesses say some armed men of the MP arrived at the registration centre around and tried to prevent some of the prospective voters from taking part in the exercise.

They claim the people do not reside in the constituency and have been bused by her opponent Naa Koryoo Okunor of the National Democratic Congress.

At least four gunshots were reportedly fired whilst some motor bikes were also set ablaze.

Minister admits firing shots

Mavis Hawa Koomson who is the incumbent MP for the Awutu Senya constituency has admitted that she fired the shots in self-defense.

“None of my men had guns on then when we got to the centre. I fired the shots myself. I am a Member of Parliament, I need to protect myself.

It was at dawn, my police escort had not started work yet. So that is a mechanism I have adopted in his absence,” she said.

Madam Koomson has however refused to indicate the type of gun used at the registration centre.

EC condemns violence

The Electoral Commission has condemned the violence that have marred the voters registration exercise at some centres including the Kasoa incident.

In a statement the EC asked the security agencies to investigate the issue as a matter of urgency to bring the perpetrators to book.

Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. The case has also been taken over by the Central Regional Police CID.
