Ghana’s former President, John Mahama has picked a woman as his running mate for the 2020 presidential election.
Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s vice presidential candidacy was announced on Monday by the opposition NDC in Ghana’s capital Accra.
This is the first time any of Ghana’s major political parties in the fourth republic is picking a woman as a running mate.
Opoku-Agyemang was the education minister under the former president between 2013 and 2017.
John Mahama said in a statement that his party’s hierarchy “unanimously, endorsed my nomination of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as my Running Mate for the December 2020 election.
Naana Jane is God-fearing, a distinguished scholar, a conscientious public servant and a role model.”
She is a veteran educationist and the first female Vice Chancellor of a public university of Ghana when she was appointed for that role in 2008 at University of Cape Coast (UCC).
Opoku-Agyemang has also served as Ghana’s representative to UNESCO’s Executive Board, a position she was elected to in 2009.
She welcomed her nomination saying she was willing to work hard to get the opposition party back into power.
Meanwhile the ruling party, NPP has downplayed the viability of the candidature of a female running mate for the opposition party.
